Handy Manny & Bob The Builder Turned Farmer

Tonight we went to our church's Halloween alternative, Noah's Ark Carnival. Ethan dressed up as Handy Manny and Caleb was supposed to be Bob the Builder . . . however, he didn't want to wear his yellow hard hat, so he ended up looking more like a farmer! :-) We had a fun night going around with Mama and Papa Brisken and enjoying the games and candy!

Thanking God and Having Faith

Last week I received a bonus from work that was just the right amount we needed to cover the expense of the boys' glasses. We prayed for the money to be provided, as we've had several financial emergencies in a row over the past two months that we haven't had all the money to cover. We have been trying so hard since we took the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace class last January to live within our means and not go any further into debt and pay off our existing debt. It is still a long road for us, but we are staying faithful. I am working more hours at work to try to help things, Scott is selling things from his collections, etc. etc. But it still can be so discouraging sometimes. And I should look at the positives I suppose - had we not had our emergency fund, then we would be a lot further behind now! We were prepared for 1 or 2 emergencies, but when it becomes 5 or 6 emergencies all in a row, then we really can't sustain them all on our own! I guess that's when we do need to have faith that God will provide as we need Him to. It's a lesson I seem to need to learn over and over again. Like the bonus I just got, it was just enough to pay for the boys' glasses. And it came AFTER we had tithed the Sunday before at church. And I thanked my boss for it saying that we had really prayed for that money to cover the boys' glasses and how much I appreciated it. He said that my bonus should've actually been less, due to the percentage numbers and formula he normally follows when giving bonuses, but when he saw mine and prayed about it, he just didn't feel like that amount was right, and he gave me more. He didn't even know about the boys' glasses before that. So, that was definitely an answered prayer. I shouldn't question God's plan, when I can see over and over how He's provided for us. I just need to remember those times!!

School Pictures 2008

Here are Caleb and Ethan's school pictures from preschool this year. We didn't end up ordering them this year, as we hope to get some of them together before Christmas, but we wanted to remember these pictures just the same. Caleb's little "frown" look in his picture is classic Caleb. And we love Ethan's sweet look in his picture too!

New Toddler Bed for Caleb

We finally transitioned Caleb into his big boy toddler firetruck bed this week. I think we had been keeping him in the crib for as long as we could, more out of convenience for us. But after I saw a recall on our crib on msnbc, we quickly made the switch. This is the same toddler bed Ethan used, so it brought back memories! The first night really was the only time we had trouble with Caleb getting in and out with his newfound freedom. After that, he has done great staying in his bed! It is funny to now have two little sets of feet pitter-patter across the house in the mornings to our room to ask if it's time to get up yet. My little boy is not so little anymore.

Glasses are Ordered!

We ordered glasses for the boys this past Wednesday. They should be in hopefully by the end of next week, but I still wanted to go ahead and post a picture of Ethan and Caleb in the glasses we picked out for them. As you can see, Ethan is thrilled to be wearing them! Caleb, on the other hand, was crying and screaming most of the time while trying them on. You can see a tear on his face in this picture. I hope it won't be so hard to get Caleb to wear his, but I have a feeling it could be a challenge. Don't they look cute though?

I have a new niece!

Yesterday, October 22nd, my first niece was born to my sister, Stacy and her husband, Zach. They named her Wendy June. Stacy had to have a c-section because Wendy was head up. Luckily, my sister, Megan, was able to be there with Stacy, as well as Zach's parents. My parents are planning to visit next Thursday. Scott and I and the boys hope to maybe meet Wendy at Thanksgiving time. Here are links to both of my sister's blogs with more news about Wendy. We are so happy for Stacy and Zach!

Soccer Season is Over

Ethan's last soccer game was on Saturday. I can't believe it's already over! During the last game, his team really started getting the hang of things and many of the kids that weren't getting into the game earlier in the season started "showing up" for the game, including Ethan! Ethan had several times that he got control of the ball and dribbled it all the way down the field and right up to the goal, only to almost get a goal. He kind of assisted another kid on his team to get the ball into the goal one time, and the other two times, he lost control of the ball to a player on the other team, right as he got in front of the goal. But none the less, we were proud of him for getting his feet on the ball that much in the game! It was exciting to watch and only made us wish they had more games this season. We can look forward to next year though, as he says he would like to play again next year.

Saturday afternoon there was an awards ceremony for all the Upward Soccer participants, which was very nice. They had a magic show for the kids, and also gave out awards. Ethan got a nice trophy engraved with his name and everything. What a great end to a great soccer season! It was fun!

End of the Week

We are thankful today is the end of the week. This has seemed like a long one for us. Ethan got a good report from his teacher today. On Wednesday, we got a different note home saying Ethan was having trouble behaving anytime that he didn't get to sit or stand next to his best friend. I'm glad that all of our talks with him about being friends with everyone in his class, not just one person, and respecting and listening to his teacher, and having a good attitude even if he didn't always get his way paid off today! We are proud of him! Here are some more pictures just of us around the house tonight enjoying being a family! I love my three guys!!!

Apple Farms

This week Ethan got to visit two apple farms in two days! He went on a field trip with his class on Monday to one and Grandpa Bailey got to go along with him as his chaperone, since Scott and I both had to work. I think they had a fun time, although he only came home with a pumpkin and no apples like we thought he would! So, I think my Mom got in the mood for apples since Ethan and my Dad didn't bring any home from their trip. So, on Tuesday, my Mom, Dad, Ethan, and Caleb took a trip to another apple farm my Mom had been wanting to visit in the area. From the pictures, it looks like they all had a nice time together too! And my Mom came home with plenty of apples, so the trip must've been a success!

These are some pictures my Dad took of Ethan and his classmates on his field trip on Monday. The one in the lower left corner is of Ethan and his teacher, Mrs. Hodge.

And here are some pictures of the trip to the second apple farm with my parents. As you can see, Ethan loves eating apples. He had to try to convince Caleb that they were good. I don't know if Caleb was as sure as Ethan!
I thought these were great pics of the boys with my Dad and Mom.

Star Wars Day

After Ethan's soccer game this morning, we took a break from the stress of figuring out glasses for the boys and went to a Star Wars Day at the Roper Mountain Science Center in Greenville. They had storm troopers and other characters from the 501st fan legion (quoted for me by Scott, because I didn't know they were called the 501st fan legion :-), as well as Star Wars exhibits on all the toys, old and new, set up around the center. There were other science things set up around, like a weather room, the human body etc, but we only had an hour there before it closed, so all of our time was focused on finding the Star Wars characters so Ethan could get his picture with them - Ethan's request (and Scott's too!). Ethan, Scott, and Caleb actually did get their picture made with a Storm Trooper that was supposed to be given to us, but the guy doing the pictures got them out of order and the printer he was using jammed up, so we never got the picture after waiting about 20 minutes for it! So, we quickly found some other characters walking around. I am told that the first character below is a Scout Trooper and the second character is an Imperial Guard. By the time we got these pictures, Caleb was way past his nap time and not picture cooperative. I was actually there too, but didn't get any pictures. I was just trying to keep track of all 3 of my guys amidst the crowds . . . who knew Star Wars was so popular? Well, I guess my hubby knew that! :-) It was a fun family day!

Glasses and Speech Therapy

I am feeling overwhelmed . . . today was my day off work, which often translates into my day to go to appointments and fit everything in that I don't have time to fit in during the rest of the week when I'm at work. Ethan and Caleb had eye doctor appointments with a pediatric opthamologist. Caleb's appointment was a follow-up from 3 months ago, when we took him in to get a chalezion (small lump that looks like a stye) looked at. While there 3 months ago, the doctor discovered he had far sightedness in his right eye. She gave the option of glasses, but I wanted to take the wait and see approach. So, this was the follow-up to that. I decided to schedule Ethan for a regular check-up at the same time, just to have everything checked out in case it was a similar problem that ran in our children's genes. Well, sure enough Ethan seems to have the same identical problem. He is mostly using his left eye to see, because his right eye has some far sightedness. So, I can't explain everything in the way the doctor described it to me, but basically the doctor is recommending both of the boys getting glasses to correct the vision in their right eyes. She said that children develop their vision up to age 10 usually, and if no correction is made before then, then the children might not ever have the ability to be able to see 20/20. Of course Scott was not able to be at the appointment with us, and is confused with this diagnosis. He wonders why putting a patch over one eye before trying glasses wouldn't be tried first. I asked the doctor that though, and she said because the prescription is so bad in that one eye, that they wouldn't be able to see out of it if the other was covered up. I agree with him though, that this is so early to put a child in glasses. Ages 4 and 2 . . . and this meaning they would probably be wearing glasses the rest of their lives. But if we don't do glasses, then they may never have the potential to see to the best ability. And then of course, there's the cost . . . another thing not planned in our budget that all of a sudden will have to be figured in. I'm sure we'll figure out a way, but it is overwhelming to think about because glasses are not cheap from what I've researched on kids glasses just this afternoon. Then there's the issue of them even keeping them on, breaking them, etc. Scott and I are still figuring out what our course of action will be. One idea is for Scott and I to go in and talk together to the opthamologist so Scott can understand a little better directly from her, why she recommends this. Another option is a second opinion . . . although from what we've been told and heard, she is the best one for pediatric opthamology in this area. It is just hard to know what the right thing to do is. Please pray for us as we make this decision on what to do with this news. On an up note . . . Ethan was a perfect eye patient today. He even sat in the big chair all by himself and got his dilating drops without Mommy even holding his hand! (Much to my disappointment of not being needed by him and being proud of him for doing it all on his own at the same time!)

And onto the second subject of my post, Speech Therapy. While we were at Walmart doing some errands in between waiting for Ethan's eyes to finish dilating before going back to the doctor to be checked (see trying to fit in a million things at once), I got a call from the lady that came and evaluated Caleb for speech therapy from the county last week. She said that Caleb does qualify for the Babynet services. She said everything was fine in the evaluation in every other area, with a small speech delay noted in the speech category. So, they now refer us to a local service, Can Do Kids, who will be calling me within a week to set up therapy appointments and schedule. I am glad that he qualifies for some help, but also overwhelmed at how we're going to fit in these therapy sessions. I'm sure it can all be worked out . . . it's just a lot of news to take in for one day.

Here are some reminders of why I keep working at this thing called motherhood, even with all the overwhelming feelings it often brings me!

Around the House this Week

Here are a few pictures of my guys around the house this week.

Scott, Ethan, and Caleb coloring Star Wars pictures at the kitchen table. (I think Scott might've had just as much, if not more fun doing these than the boys! :-)

Scott and Ethan chilling out in the green lazy boy chair!

Caleb cheesing for the camera with his baby boy baby doll. This was the boy baby doll I got for Ethan before I had Caleb to get him used to preparing for being a big brother. Caleb has been taking care of this baby lately, putting him to sleep, putting his paci in, covering him with his blanket, etc. It's cute! Does this mean it's time to have another baby so Caleb can be a big brother too?? We'll see . . . that is still undecided as of yet by Caleb and Ethan's parents. :-)

Caleb and the Computer Chair

Caleb had fun one night getting in and out of the computer chair. He was very proud of himself!

Bubbles and Bikes

The boys and I had a fun day together on Tuesday, my day off this week. We stuck around the house, since Caleb's speech evaluator from the county was coming to the house at 11 am. We enjoyed blowing bubbles outside and riding bikes for a little while outside before she came. The evaluation was different than I thought it would be, as she mainly talked to me and filled out paperwork from my answers to what Caleb could and couldn't do. We should know the results sometime this week from the evaluation, as to whether Caleb will qualify for speech services from the county or not. My gut feeling is that he may not qualify, because most of the things she asked me, Caleb could do. Of course the only thing I answered no to were a lot of the communicating questions, which was the main reason I had him evaluated anyway. I figure it couldn't hurt to get him tested, and if he does qualify, then that will be some extra help we can get for him for free. So, we will see what we find out soon!
